Barbara Käsmann-Kellner, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of the Section KiOlon (Paediatric Ophthalmology, Low Vision and Neuro Ophthalmology) at Saarland University Hospital in Homburg, Germany. Her main areas of research are low vision in infancy, delayed visual maturation, abnormal eye movements with a focus on nystagmus, albinism and aniridia. She has a special interest in the systemic manifestations of albinism and aniridia. Her research in nystagmus includes the correlation of clinical characteristics (phenotype) and genetics (genotype) in albinism and aniridia, as well as a focus on phenotypically atypical albinism and the correlation of cerebral anomalies in the presence of optic nerve hypoplasia. Dr Käsmann-Kellner has also looked at low vision and the connection to neurology. using fMRI to show the altered cerebral pathways in albinism. She enlarged the specialized center for low vision, organized a low vision clinic and has assisted with two large schools for blind and visually impaired children. Barbara is also an enthusiastic teacher and counsels support groups for children with low vision conditions. She has authored and co-authored more than 85 peer-reviewed papers, 12 book chapters and is on the editorial board of several scientific Journals.
