Professor Michael Hoffmann, PhD is head of the Clinical Experimental Sensory Physiology Section of the Ophthalmic Department at the University of Magdeburg, Germany. This department addresses the pathological human visual system with eyesight, insight and foresight. Prof. Hoffmann applies a broad methodology to investigate the structure and function of the eye and visual areas of the brain with the aim of precise diagnostics and the development of novel therapies. Since 1999, he has been involved in research in albinism. By applying a combined approach of retinal and cortical imaging, electrophysiology and perception-testing he has been able to identify the relationship between cortical mapping of the visual field in human albinism to visual function. He also applies this approach to other chiasma malformations, such as achiasma. This work has helped to elucidate the general principles of human visual system development. He has received continuous project funding by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 2002, is a member of the ‘Commission for quality assurance of sensory physiological measures and equipment’, a memberof the German Society of Ophthalmology, training coordinator in EU-funded innovative training networks ‘NextGenVis’, authored 90+ publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals, and is a reviewer for many scientific journals and funding bodies. In 2016, he received the prestigious ‘Elfriede-Aulhorn award’ for outstanding research in neuro-ophthalmology.
